And the Winners are…
The winners of the wildfire fundraiser raffle Bundle #1 goes to Sheila Powell of Salem, and Bundle #2 to Linda Stryker of New York. And… Linda has donated part of her bundles of goodies to Tami Llewellyn. Wasn't that sweet? What a great bunch of people you all are! And the best part is that we raised $2515 for Tami and others in need. Thank you all for donating!
Virtual Raffle for Oregon Wildfire Relief
You may have heard how the current wildfires here in Oregon are decimating entire towns and communities. Reports are that over 1500 structures including 700 homes have been lost. It’s so heartbreaking to think of losing a home, or worse, a loved one. I wanted to do something to help, something more than what I could do individually. So, this is what I came up with… a raffle of sorts. I have solicited donations, mainly from the quilting community on Instagram. Some really generous folks stepped up to donate some yummy quilting goodies! I’m so excited to be able to offer you the chance to win some cool stuff, all while helping those in need. One of the people that will benefit from the raffle is a f2 PDF Patterns by Laura at New Song Quiltingellow quilter and Treasurer of our Mid Valley Quilt Guild, Tami. She and her husband were fortunate to be awake at 1:00 in the morning and realize that the embers falling from the sky were getting larger and setting things on fire. By the time they drove away from home the fire was burning on both sides of the road. Thankful for their lives but a bit underinsured (her advice now is… make sure you have the proper insurance! :-), I’m happy to be able to raise some money to help them replace necessary items and maybe some of that stash that was years in the making.
I have put the items together in 2 bundles. Both bundles have a lot of the same items, especially the pdf patterns, but here are some significant differences as well, so look carefully! Tickets are $10 each, donations can be made via Venmo to Heidi-Rodli (preferred as there are no fees) or PayPal to Piece & Joy Quilting Co. Locals may contact me about donating in cash. In the notes with your donation please indicate which bundle you would like to win, Number 1 or Number 2. Please note that most items are downloadable PDF patterns. Shipping for the batting and T-Shirts are for U.S. residents only. You may want to check with the other folks who are providing gift certificates to see if they will ship items internationally if you are overseas. Postage may be additional. Tickets will be available through Sunday 9-20-20 and the winners will be announced Monday. So without further ado, here they are:
Bundle 1 includes:
9) 1 T-Shirt of your choice from Buttermilk Tees
Bundle number 1 has a value of over $645!!!
Bundle 2 includes:
1) A fat quarter pack of 9 Tula Pink True Colors
7) 1 PDF pattern of Joyful Stripes by Allison Ramsing
9) 1 T-Shirt of your choice from Buttermilk Tees
10) Diamond Meadows and Sun Goddess PDF Patterns by Jessica Poemape
11) 3 Pdf Patterns of your choice by Jennifer Jones of Penelope Handmade
12) 4 Pdf patterns of your choice by Jayne of Plain Creations
14) A bundle of 5 Benartex fat quarters
And there you have it! Bundle 2 has a value of over $665
Email me or dm on Instagram with any questions. piecejoyquilt@gmail.com After a winner is randomly chosen you will be asked for your email and address. Donors will be sending the items directly to you. Thank you so much, let’s see how much money we can raise together! P.S. Am I allowed to enter too? Cause I’d really like to win this stuff!
Featured Quilter of the Month…
For the last several years I have included a “Featured Quilter” section in my monthly newsletter, highlighting one of my clients. It’s been such a fun way to learn more about one another and create a community around my awesome quilting friends. I’ve been told that it is the best part of my newsletter. I’m not sure what that says about my other content, but you’d better believe I’m going to continue including it! For fun I thought I’d share my most recent Featured Quilter here on the blog. So without further ado, let me introduce you to Susan and a few of her amazing quilts!
I’m Susan Gahlsdorf, quilt maker, native Oregonian, OSU graduate, and 40 year resident of Salem. During this time my husband Dave and I raised our boys, Oliver and Wendell, and I served my community as a Certified Pubic Accountant in government finance.
I have been sewing most of my life and I especially love making quilts. Years ago, I hand quilted each one. Although I enjoyed the process, I had so many projects and ideas it became difficult to keep up. And like most of us, life got busy with family, volunteer work, managing a home and a career. Sometimes I wondered what it would be like to dedicate my time to sewing.
Now that I am retired I sew a lot. When I get inspired, each step is a joy; selecting fabrics, learning new techniques, cutting, sewing, then turning each project over to Heidi who brings out the best in each one. Bless her!!! I met Heidi through my longtime quilting friend, Dixie, who referred me. If it wasn’t for Heidi I couldn’t complete all my projects. She quickly learned my style, which helps tremendously when deciding quilt designs. And she understands my quirks, like the fact that even the most symmetrical quilt has a definite top and bottom.
My quilting fascination came from my grandmothers who were both quilters. They’d wrap me in them at night and teach me to sew by day. I have treasured family heirlooms from the 30s, my own vintage creations from the 80s-90s and now, after a 20-some year break, I am back to quilt making.
I enjoy learning new techniques and am drawn to modern designs, although I have made a few traditional quilts. I wish I could pull together something uniquely mine but I am a left-brainer. Technique comes easier than creativity. So I’m a replicator. I get inspiration from Pinterest. Typically I’ll use a pattern, but sometimes it’s fun to figure out how to make a pattern, calculate yardage, research fabrics, then bring something to life that was once just a picture.
Friends ask what I do with all the quilts I make. I just can’t have enough. Each bed needs a quilt and each quilt needs a companion at the foot of the bed. And I like to change them out every couple months. I stack quilts on ottomans and chests and drape them over couches and chairs. I love displaying a new quilt. It just freshens the decor.
I do best when I can balance my quilting hobby with other interests such as golf, snow skiing and travel. I try to have an active lifestyle. Every couple years my husband and I indulge in a cycling tour to Europe. The culture, history and surroundings have inspired a few quilts. While I enjoy all my interests, I find it takes self-restraint to structure this balance in my life. There’s just never enough time to make quilts!
I hope you enjoyed this quilting eye candy, compliments of Susan! She does a fantastic job and I’m so thankful to get to work on her quilts!
